The Saturn Awards, genre film's own honors

Updated · 3 min read

The Saturn Awards are American awards presented every year since 1972 by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, a nonprofit organization founded in Los Angeles by Donald A. Reed. They honor films, TV series and artists in science fiction, fantasy, horror and genre entertainment more broadly, fields long overlooked by the major ceremonies. The trophy depicts the planet Saturn and its rings, which gives the awards their name.

An academy for genre film

Donald A. Reed, a devoted fan of fantastic cinema, founded the academy in 1972 to champion the films Hollywood's establishment looked down on: monsters, space voyages, wizards and vampires. The idea was to give these genres recognition comparable to the Oscars, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, with which the organization has no connection. The earliest awards went by another name before the planet-shaped trophy took over and gave the honors their current title.

After Reed's death in 2001, the academy has been led by Robert Holguin, who has continued the annual ceremony.

Why Saturn?

The ringed planet is science fiction's most recognizable visual emblem: from pulp magazine covers to 1950s movie posters, it instantly says "outer space." Choosing it for a trophy is a proud declaration of genre identity. It echoes the long history of Saturn in space art, covered on our page about Saturn in science fiction, and the fascination exerted by Saturn's rings since they were first seen in the 17th century.

The categories

The Saturn Awards are known for their large number of categories, which have changed along with the industry. They include:

  • best film by genre: science fiction, fantasy, horror, action or thriller, and more recently superhero films;
  • independent, international and animated film;
  • performers: lead actor and actress, supporting roles, younger performer;
  • crafts: direction, writing, music, costume, make-up, special effects;
  • television and streaming, with categories for genre series and their casts;
  • home media, for DVD, Blu-ray and 4K releases and restorations.

There are also honorary awards, such as the Life Career Award for an entire body of work and the George Pal Memorial Award, named after the producer of The War of the Worlds (1953) and director of The Time Machine (1960).

How voting works

Nominees and winners are chosen by members of the academy, which brings together industry professionals, critics and genre enthusiasts. Eligibility is based on US release dates. The ceremony's timing has shifted over the decades, with some editions held late in the year.

A place of its own on the awards calendar

The Saturn Awards lack the profile of the Oscars or the Golden Globes, and some critics fault their sheer number of categories. But they remain the leading US award devoted specifically to genre entertainment, and they have often recognized films, shows and performers the big academies ignored. For science fiction and fantasy actors, a Saturn statuette is recognition from peers and from the genre's most passionate audience.

Saturn, from screen to sky

The trophy joins a long list of things that borrow the sixth planet's name or silhouette: the Sega Saturn, the Saturn car brand, the Saturn V rocket and the "Saturn" movement of Holst's The Planets.
